Flying Foxes

One of the coolest experiences in the Philippines happened in Subic Bay. I was running along a road through the rain forest. I saw something the size of a red-tailed hawk soaring, but strangely, it looked like a bat. A little further along there were thousands of them swirling around in the sky, and thousands roosting in the tree tops. It felt other-worldly. I took Joy and the rest of the relatives there later. Dispite their intimidating size, they are harmless frugivores in the suborder Megachiroptera (literally Megabats).

Red Bat

We caught a Red Bat last night unintentionally in the owl nets. We were not too happy about the situation, and neither was he. He was quite angry and was snapping and hissing. He chomped his way out of the net with a little assistance from us. We did take time to weigh and photograph him before we let him fly away.
