Mama Mishka

Even though you have already "met" Mishka, I wanted to have another individual post for her. When we first adopted Mishka she was very pregnant, so it was sort of hard to get to know her right away. From the start, she seemed very timid and submissive, but sweet. It has been fun to watch her personality grow. Mishka (or Mama) is still very sweet, but she has become less timid as she has gotten to know us more. We were wondering if she would be dominated by her baby girls, because she seemed so submissive at first, but she is actually one of the more dominating rats. Mama has quite a personality. She is usually one of the first to come to you when you open the cage door, and she loves getting treats. She even waits for Ben's oatmeal bowl in the morning and often boxes out the other rats in an effort to have the bowl all to herself. She loves stashing things and will take almost anything you offer her, including rocks and coins. We have never had a stasher like her. Another funny thing is that she sleeps really hard. When she was nursing the babies, we would often find her stretched out in the cage, almost looking like she was dead (which was very alarming!), but she would just be asleep! Nursing 12 babies was a lot of hard work! But even now, she is still hard to wake up at times. Now that her babies are as big as her, we can only tell them apart from either their personalities or their belly markings. It is amazing how different rats can be!

Mama peeking out from the cage.

Hanging out in the little cage. She would often retreat there for some peace and quiet.

Mishka's handiwork- she lined up these rocks in a row!

Looking around.

Exploring. Her little prance is cute.

Showing off her belly markings.

Saying hi to the camera.
