Bird Grab Bag

Rose-breasted Grosbeaks were singing for us along a stream south of Moweaqua, Illinois.

Great Basin Birds part 1

We had been watching this Raven pair for quite a while this spring. They had all ready had a clutch fail. This one seems to be doing pretty well. Those nestling ravens look almost full size, and could beg quite loudly.

Kestrels seem pretty skittish when cameras are around, so I always appreciate a chance to take a picture that doesn't have sky for a bright sky for background.

I have seen Western Tanagers previously, but they still captivate my attention whenever one flies by. This guy was singing in the evening while I was finishing up my hike at the Great Basin National Park. He even obliged by staying put while I climbed steep hillside so that I could look across at him.

Scarlet Tanager

Sunday morning I went to walk around the woodlot by our place. The birds were great. There were Scarlet Tanagers, Baltimore Orioles, Wilson's Warblers, Blackpoll Warblers, Blackburnian Warblers, Yellow Warblers, and American Redstarts all over the place. It was hard to tear myself away and go to church.

Female Scarlet Tanager

This girl flew right between Joy and I to grab an insect off the path in front of us. Took us by surprise. We didn't see the male around, so we could just enjoy the subtle beauty of the female.

Scarlet Tanager

The statehouse was a happening place for migrants this morning. I hear it was better earlier in the week. Here is a Scarlet Tanager. Both male and female were present. Other birds of note seen from the statehouse; Kestrel, a yellow-bellied sapsucker, lots of catbirds, white-throats and swamp sparrows, ovenbirds, a common yellowthroat, and a yellow-breasted chat.
