Hayden Valley Bison Herd
Before going to Yellowstone, I would have thought a traffic jam for a Bison herd would be a cliche experience; tourists gawking at the last vestiges of a once mighty species. First-hand, it was a very fun and fascinating experience.
The Bison herd was quite large and was very unconcerned by the vehicles on the road. The herd was crossing the road, coming up from the Yellowstone River. All we could do was to wait patiently for the herd amble on.
They were so close to the vehicle at times that we could have reached out and smacked their backside. We somehow managed to restrain ourselves.
We were amazed at a guy in the car in front of us who got out and walked along with the Bison. I thought we were going to see some natural selection in action.
It was hard to describe the sounds these guys made. Definitely not 'mooing'. Closer to a rumbling snort. I liked this big guy sticking his tongue out.
