McCormick's Creek and Cataract Falls

Joy and I spent a weekend getaway at McCormick's Creek State Park. It was a nice quiet time to stay at the Inn and enjoy the park.

On the way down, we stopped at Cataract Falls. The falls are marketed as the largest falls in Indiana. Turns out that they mean largest by volume. Above is Joy sitting above the upper falls. Below is the upper falls.

The lower falls, where Mill Creek empties into Cagles Mill Lake.

Joy at the McCormick's Creek falls. A large tree had fallen across the falls. I imagine that if it were warm, there would be a lot of people climbing on it.

Joy checking out the Old Statehouse Quarry in McCormick's Cove Nature Preserve. Monday turned out to be a beautiful, sunny late winter day. Great for hiking.

There was a great little waterfall on a stream in the Wolf Cave Nature Preserve. During higher water-levels, the water would flow over the top of the falls, but that day the water was flowing through cracks in the rock and coming out the middle of the falls. Spring ephemerals, such as Spring Beauty, Hepatica, and False Rue Anemone were just barely poking their way up, but were not yet blooming. The orchids Aplectrum hyemale were everywhere, with only a few Tipularia discolor.

Cataract Falls is the largest in Indiana, not by volume, but by total drop (height) when you add the whole falls, both the upper and the lower, together. It's like 90 ft in height for the total drop.
