Nodding Pogonia

I found these orchids blooming in McCormick's Creek State Park today while I was running. I had to go back and get a picture. Nodding Pogonia or Three-birds Orchid (Triphora trianthophora) is primarily a saprophyte and does not have to come above ground every year. Each flower (commonly three) blooms synchronously with the other plants in the colony. These flowers only last a day and it may up to a week in between blooms. I had been looking forward to seeing this orchid.
