Florida Anurans

Of course there were more Anurans than just treefrogs out Sunday night. Some we sought out, some we just found. We also found Pig Frogs, but I just got to listen to them without getting to see them.

Anaxyrus quercicus - Oak Toad
These guys were the dominant sound at the first pond we visited. It is hard to imagine, but the sound of them was more than deafening and was even painful. Plugging your ears did not diminish it much at all. Kelly and I could hardly hear each other speak. The third picture of them shows how small and numerous they were.

Anaxyrus terrestris - Southern Toad
These guys were everywhere at night.

Gastrophryne carolinensis - Eastern Narrowmouth Toad
The first Narrowmouth Toad that I saw was being eaten by a giant waterbug. These toads have a distinctive call that sounds like a sheep to me.

Lithobates okaloosae - Florida Bog Frog
This was the final stop on Sunday night. Notice the lack of webbing on the toes. The sundew gives a size perspective. They have a specialized habitat and range.

Dear Ben,

I work for the Encyclopedia of life (EOL.org) and I'm interested in illustrating a text overview I wrote for the endangered Florida Bog Frog (Lithobates okaloosae). Would you be willing to copyright your wonderful image of this species with a Creative Commons license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/)? EOL is committed to housing only open-access content. We would love to upload your image and, of course credit you and link to your blog entry.

Many thanks for considering - feel free to email me at danac@umd.edu if this is of interest to you.
