Burrowing Owl

Athene cunicularia
Through a special arrangement, we got to tag along with the monitoring biologist for the owls at Eglin AFB. These owls take advantage of this man-made environment and live on a test range. It is crazy to imagine a little owl digging a hole and living underground. Some of these owls were even living in Gopher Tortoise holes.
