Jasper-Pulaski

We took a trip up to see the Sandhill Crane gathering at Jasper-Pulaski this past weekend. The last official count had been over ten thousand and the weather was looking fabulous. It turned out that something spooked the flock an hour or so before we got there, but we still got to see thousands of cranes. They kept flying in as the sun set. I love visiting them to be reminded that there is an wild world present that is only obliquely connected with ours. (Which is challenging in the Central Indiana corn belt, with only the weather and the stars remaining somewhat untouched.)
