Stemonitis
I was walking through a bush honeysuckle infested area near Cincinnati (That will help narrow down my location.) when I spied this growing on a dead tree. I had never seen anything like it before. It looked like a brown koosh ball. The strands were very thin near the base. I did not touch it, but blew on it instead, producing a puff of spores. I thought it must be some kind of fungus. Later, Dr. Ruch corrected me, it is a slime mold from the genus Stemonitis. At one point, I would have been correct calling a slime mold a fungus, but now they are considered part of the kingdom Protista.
