Lexington Arch
Lexington Arch is within Great Basin National Park, but it is not located off the main entrance. The trailhead is 25 miles from Baker, and 11 miles are on a narrow, dirt road. The park is right near the Utah border, and the road to Lexington Arch starts in Utah. This cabin was in a picturesque location.
The trailhead is at 7440' and the trail headed right up the mountain via switchbacks. The view back down Lexington Canyon towards the Snake Valley was great.
The highlight of the first stretch of the trail was getting to see a Blue Grouse. I am disappointed that I did not get a picture.
As the trail climbed higher, it kept cutting across a snowfield that got larger and larger. When it leveled off at 8270', the mountain side was completely snow covered. The snow was firm enough to walk on, but the downside of this was that it was very challenging to follow tracks. Also, in some places it was icy. I completely lost the trail at the top. After scouting around, I saw the arch in the distance and made my way towards it.
Lexington Arch is one of the largest limestone arches in the western US. It is six stories tall. I didn't make it to the arch, because the trail led to a place where the snowpack was icy and sloped towards the edge of a canyon.
