American Tree Sparrow

American Tree Sparrow seems like a poor name for this winter visitor. It only visits the continental US in the winter and it doesn't seem to have a particular affinity for trees. (The above photo just happens to have a distant woodlot as a backdrop.) There is a flock near my place, and they seem to spend all of their time in the formerly weedier sections of the harvested corn fields. (Where there is now trampled down patches of foxtail, amaranth, and ragweed.) One thing I enjoy the most about a flock of American Tree Sparrows is listening to them when they are all calling to each other.
