Turtleheads

I had the chance to see both Turtleheads blooming this month. These are some quite showy members of the Snapdragon (Scrophulaceae) family. Even the scientific name aludes to the flowers reputed resemblance to a turtle's head.

This is Chelone glabra or White Turtlehead. This was blooming in a high-quality seep/fen in northern Vigo county. White Turtlehead is less common in Indiana to the southwest.

This is Chelone obliqua, or Red Turtlehead. This was blooming in the seep wetland at Holliday Park in Indianapolis. Red Turtlehead is more common to the southwest in Indiana.
